Wilde Week

How wonderful to receive the OW Society publication Intentions — and a privilege to see my contribution to this eminent publication!

It was also exciting to see in a bookshop this week a copy of Oscariana, the book Wilde’s wife compiled with a collection of her husband’s aphorisms.

London is wonderful!

At last I have had articles published in both TARS and OW Society publications!

Truly though, it is important never to lose our connection to the great classics in literature!

I have also engaged in activities to bring the incredible, amazing, lost story of these two authors and the links A R unwittingly unlocked between Wilde and Douglas to a wider platform.

These authors, thought poles apart, actually had much more in common than people think!

O W Society member Mr John Cooper has highlighted that O W shared A R’s love of life on the ocean wave, was at the very least a competent sailor and certainly an enthusiastic one!

A R also unwittingly unlocked the key to the enigmatic relationship between Oscar Wilde and Douglas in his own masterpiece lost to society in 2018.

Both men were both part of Cool Britannia!

Wilde and Crouch End

Oscar Wilde’s most famous play produced by Classic Spring is also featuring at the Art House cinema Crouch End.

Crouch End is a delightful place not overrun by tourists.

Here are some photos of the park there in Wilde’s favourite month – Autumn.

Poet in London

“The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it!”

This is the famous Wilde quote.  I have approached Classic Spring, currently producing The Importance of Being Earnest at The Vaudeville Theatre London.

Ah, the cucumber sandwiches!

There will also be an Oscar Wilde walk with fellow members of The Oscar Wilde Society at the end of the month.

More later.

Swallows and Amazons 1974 Film

It was wonderful to meet TARS members and some of the team who worked on the 1974 film of Swallows and Amazons on Saturday, 28th July at The Alhambra Cinema Keswick.

The Arthur Ransome Society President Sophie Neville gave a charming talk before the film, which added a little extra magic to the event.

She played the part of tomboy Titty Walker, displaying a lovely combination of vulnerability, exuberance and imagination that were entirely natural.

All the cast were magnificent.

It was especially lovely to see the amazing Zannah Hamilton when she was in the first blush of youth as a resilient and capable Susan Walker.

The late Claude Whatham who directed the movie showed exceptional mastery in the way he drew out comedy from this gentle period piece based on Arthur Ransome’s most famous novel.

His work was thoroughly complimented by orchestral music which matched the mood and followed every beat of a superb screenplay.

Afterwards the President of the Society signed her books for Arthur Ransome fans who attended the screening.  These included delighted children who had thoroughly enjoyed themselves on an uncompromisingly rainy afternoon!

One of her books is The Secrets of Filming Swallows and Amazons.  The Kindle version is extremely engaging with its video trailer of this work containing behind the scenes footage that happened as the film was in production.

Lady Windermere’s Fan

There is something of a Wilde revival in London at the present time, which immediately conjures up the image of witty plays with wealthy characters in who offer much-needed laughter to an audience in these troubled times.

Wilde afficionados in England’s capital are sure to be fulfilled this chilly March.

This current production of  Wilde’s sparkling comedy by the company Classic Spring is at the Vaudeville Theatre in London and playing to brilliant reviews with the superb Jennifer Saunders and Samantha Spiro in the lead female roles.

It was Wilde’s first great success when he began to taste the nectar of fortune in addition to fame.

Wilde found it difficult to get into this play the reason for which can be found in Arthur Ransome’s Oscar Wilde: A Critical Study.

It is a work well worth chasing up at your library as it shows superb insight that matches Richard Ellmann’s masterpiece which came out in 1987.

Leeds Library Festival

Leeds library is a truly inspiring place to visit and during the festival there were an awe-inspiring range of art and craft workshops, presentations and hubs to choose from.

The last item yesterday was my talk Wilde Ransomed about how A R made Wilde in the twentieth century by his book Oscar Wilde: A Critical Study.

He was the perfect choice of subject because Ransome is a Leeds native.

The Leeds Central Library manager Rose was kindly on hand to help with the technology.

It was a wonderful day and everyone agreed they had learned something new about the most famous and notorious relationship in the world between Wilde and Douglas.

Oscar Wilde: A Critical Study by Ransome is a work to celebrate because it has also led to the discovery in our time of a story lost in scandal.

As a drink why not try opal hush? (It is in the far right photo).

This is what Ransome used to drink along with his rebel actors, playwrights and poets from The Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

It is a combination of claret and lemonade.

Do you like it?

I have tried it and recommend it!

Enjoy!
